Momma headlined in Arkansas for the first time at The Momentary’s RØDE House on Sunday, April 26th for a one-off date between festivals in Norman and Austin. The band brought with local indie-rock favorites Idle Valley along for support, who showed up and put on what might have been their most energetic show to date.
The Momentary is full of somewhat unconventional rooms and spaces for music and art, and the RØDE House itself is this open room with a hydraulic flooring panel system, so they can move entire chunks of the floor up and down for different contexts. In order to create a stage and mezzanine, they move the center panels all the way down, and then the sides and front are all kept at their highest. It’s also got an absolutely absurd A/V system sponsored by, you guessed it, RØDE.
Before the show started, it was obvious Idle Valley was a draw on the ticket, as there were several of their tee shirts milling about among the crowd. They played a very energetic indie-rock set and at one point the entire crowd was meowing with lead singer/guitarist Ben Welborn, He pointed at his black guitar that’s covered in star stickers with big white “MEOW” on the top. Several audience members asked for setlists, until Ben proudly showed everyone the only setlist (it’s his phone background, which is a screenshot of the apple notes app).

When Momma arrived on stage, the audience lost it. The band got to their gear, took a breath, and ripped into “Last Kiss”. The setlist was primarily songs from their last two albums, as well as one of their most popular live tracks, “Biohazard”, and a single “Bang Bang”, which was really when the audience bought into the show. It became perfectly clear that Momma is an even better live band. There’s an extra kick to their music when it’s not studio polished. Every performance is a little different, a little imperfect, but in a way that serves their sound. This was really exemplified during “Biohazard” which, on the studio album, includes a singular scream that is entirely reliant on the audience for shows. Sometimes it happens, occasionally it doesn’t. This time around, several audience members screamed in perfect time, which seemed to satisfy lead singers/guitarists Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten. They wrapped up with fan favorite “Speeding 72”. Much to the audience's dismay, there was no encore, which seemingly due to this being the only non-festival show on their calendar anytime soon.
