Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist live at Brooklyn Paramount by Beau Croxton
On September 21st and 22nd, Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist performed two sold-out shows at Brooklyn Paramount for their Alfredo Tour– Occult was there to catch night 2.
The set design onstage that night reflected the neon-lit, Japanese aesthetic of the duo’s most recent masterpiece collaboration – Alfredo II. The show opened with support from Swedish composer/instrumentalist Sven Wunder, rapper Mavi and Jalen Ngonda. Every artist performed with the backdrop of the “Alfredo’s” restaurant, known from the visuals of the Alfredo II album.
Sven Wunder’s set was a perfect warm up for the evening. Sven’s catalog ranges from psychedelic Eastern music, to Asian-tinged instrumentation and orchestral arrangements that are slightly hip-hop adjacent. His music hit like the best samples from Freddie and Alchemist’s new Alfredo II album. Rapper Mavi’s enthusiasm carried the crowd, but it was Jalen Ngonda that brought down the house with his earth shattering, soulful, high-register voice. Jalen was backed by a retro-rock band, and every time he hit his Janis Joplin-esque high notes, the crowd went absolutely ballistic.
For the main event– The Alchemist came out to set the tone, and Freddie Gibbs burst out through the door of Alfredo’s restaurant wearing a Kung Fu-style robe and performing “1985”. The group tore through the first three songs of Alfredo, and followed with the first three consecutive songs of Alfredo II. There were plenty of celebrities in the house– including (Freddie Gibbs look-alike) Mahershala Ali, and Erykah Badu– who walked across the stage into the Alfredo's restaurant at one point. The rest of their remarkable set was delivered with unstoppable high-energy, spanning both Alfredo albums and a few back catalog cuts.
